University for the Creative Arts
At the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), leadership isn’t just reserved for those at the top. With a bold vision and a commitment to continuous development, the Learning & Organisational Development team has been working in partnership with Ali Stewart & Co to embed a culture of empowered leadership across the entire academic community. This is the story of how two dedicated professionals - Lidija and Heather - are making that vision a reality.
The Challenges Faced by University for the Creative Arts
UCA wanted to ensure that its senior leaders were not just exceptional academics, but exceptional leaders of people. As the organisation underwent significant change, it became clear that a wider group - including academic staff - needed the tools, confidence, and resilience to lead effectively.
The challenge was to move beyond isolated training and build lasting leadership capability at every level of the university.
How Ali Stewart & Co Responded
In 2021, Lidija Jones, Learning & Organisational Development Partner, became an accredited practitioner of our Liberating Leadership programme (now known as The Liberator). Her dedication sparked a broader cultural shift toward people-first leadership.
By 2023, her colleague Heather Spyrakis stepped forward to continue that momentum. Through the Pioneering Professional programme (now The Pioneer), she equipped herself to support academic staff in developing their own personal leadership and resilience.
In 2025, Heather took another step, completing Step 1: The Art of Coaching. She will join our Coaching Accreditation Programme in September, deepening her ability to challenge and nurture others through coaching.
The Results
Together, Lidija and Heather are helping to embed a leadership culture that reaches far beyond the senior team. Their work is shaping a workplace defined by openness, courage, and growth - one where staff at every level feel empowered to lead, contribute, and thrive.
At UCA, leadership is no longer confined to a job title. It’s becoming a shared mindset - and a powerful force for positive change.
